Pregnant and don’t know where to start when it comes to maternity clothes shopping? I’ve put together a Maternity Clothes Checklist below for the soon-to-be mum. Depending on your lifestyle and budget this list looks a bit different for everyone but I’ve broken it down by essentials versus “nice-to-have” items…
Essential | Nice-to-Have | Shop Smart Tip |
Maternity bra | 1 comfy bra to sleep in once the girls get a little larger.
T-shirts | 2 tops in neutral colours like white, black, oatmeal, or grey. You can buy form fitting with ruching on the sides so it stretches as you grow.
Tank tops | 2 tanks in neutral colours like white, black, oatmeal, or grey. I would select the opposite colours of the ones you chose in t-shirts so you can mix it up.
Loose-fitting blouse/top | Hopefully you don’t need to buy a blouse and can re-use a top that you had before you got pregnant.
Men’s style button down shirt | This can be worn casually with leggings/ jeans or with dress pants/skirt.
Black leggings | Hopefully you can wear a pair that you owned prior to pregnancy. You can either try low-waisted or high-waisted.
Yoga pants | If you work out a lot you might want to invest in a pair that you can wear to class.
Loose-fitting pants |
| Select a pair with an elastic or drawstring waistband. Try a fun print! |
Dress pants | You might want 2 pairs if you live in a cold climate and work in a corporate environment with a strict dress code. Select 1 black and 1 charcoal for a sleek and clean look that will allow you to mix and match the best.
Jeans | 1 pair of blue jeans will take you miles. If the budget allows…I would scoop a black or white pair too.
Shorts | If you live in a warm climate or plan on taking a vacation, shorts might be nice.
Flowy dress | Hopefully you already own a loose-fitting dress, prior to pregnancy, and can slip into that for style and comfort.
Little Black Dress (LBD) | It doesn’t have to be little but a black dress is essential. I prefer curve hugging to show off the bump.
Slim-fitting skirt | Find a flattering skirt and pair it with a nice top or blouse for work or an evening out. |
Other ‘Shop Smart Tips’ to keep in mind…
- Take a good friend shopping with you so they can provide their honest feedback.
- Find pieces that will get you your money’s worth.
- Buy the right fit so that you are comfortable.
- Buy neutral colour tops and pants so that you can mix and match the most.
- Work with what you have; accessorize with pieces you already own to keep costs down.
